Disney Magic Augmented Reality Promotion on Times Square

Augmented reality apps and promotions are getting more and more popular nowadays. Disney has already engaged in several similar activities, but this one is particularily interesting.

When people stand in a marked circle on Times Square, well known Disney characters start to interact with them on the screen above them. I am not sure if the concept is similarily cool in real-time as in this well-cut video, but seems to be fun.

Will Google+ conquer the social media world?

In this video Rocketboom gives a great overview of Google’s new product and discusses its possible future effects on Facebook and Twitter.

It is too early to tell if Google plus will be a successful social media project after so many fails. The new platform took the best of both Facebook and Twitter, this resulted in a site with a pretty similar look and feel to already existing sites and it does not involve anything extraordinarily new. It is true that “circles” is a much needed feature and it is more usable than Facebook’s friend lists. This function is, however, easy to copy and will alone not be enough for the inflexible users to switch to a new social networking portal, which at the moment is only used by early adopters. Google needs to become more innovative and constantly come out with new ideas and improvements in the future instead of only copying what the others are doing if they want to be successful in the field of social media. What do you think? Will Google+ conquer the social media world?

Turning the most boring sports into enterntaining games - A crazy Japanese concept

A friend sent me the video below a few days ago. I just could not figure out what its purpose was. After a long-lasting online search, it turned out that the video is a screen cap from a Japanese game. It seems that the game was ordered by the Japan Racing Association (JRA) to make the sport more popular.

It is a horse racing game, players can bet on the different weird race animals which have different odds. The game randomly picks an outcome for the race (assumingly also taking into account the odds) and an extremely funny/bizarre animation is showed to the player.

The Japanese sometimes have really have crazy ideas regarding entertainment but a similar concept would in my opinion also perfectly work in the Western environment. Online causal gamers who are present on the major social media sites want more than the monotonous Zynga clicking games. The key to success is linking the entertainment factor with the gaming aspect. Would you like to play the game. There is unfortunately no English version, although the commentary must be also funny. To help you with the language here is a short guide how to start playing game:

·         Wait for the big flash file to load.

·         Click Skip.

·         Click the button that follows your mouse.

·         Click Bet at the bottom.

·         Click the button that follows your mouse again.

·         Select any of the three options. It seems to be different betting modes.

·         Select a horse to bet on, the click the pink button.

·         Eventually there will be 2 buttons to choose from. Click the left one to go back to step 7 and buy more tickets. Or the right one to start the game.

And the links to the 3 different versions of the horse racing game:

JRA Version 1

JRA Version 2

JRA Version 3

Below are two videos of similar crazy games. I assume it is from the same producer. I unfortunately could not find any links to the games themselves or information about its producer. Please let me know in the comments if you manage to find anything. Thanks, enjoy!

The Greatest TED Talk Ever Sold

Morgan Spurlock, most well known for “Supersize Me”, has made a new movie. It is a documentary about product placement, marketing and advertising in movies. It unfortunately has not been in the cinemas anywhere outside the US yet. But I am looking forward to seeing it after watching Morgan’s TED talk with some thoughts and excerpts from the movie.  Here is his presentation, it is worth the 20 minutes:

Working in the field of online marketing, I often see the same fear from risk and the loose of control in how businesses communicate. Social media is an open world and if corporations would like to be active in this area, they also need to become open and honest. This world is of course not for everyone, you should not enter it only for the sake of being present there.

It is a great challenge to find the balance between being playful and at the same time mindful. But if you manage to achieve that, it is a great step towards being successful in social media.
